Setting up a discovered attack: sacrifice (2)
In this lesson you will learn how to prepare a discovered attack by capturing with a sacrifice. First you lure an enemy piece and then you can win material with a discovered attack or discovered check.
What do you have to do?
Prepare a discovered attack or check with a sacrifice, then win material by executing the discovered attack.
The black king and rook on b8 are on the same row. White would thus like to place a rook on the same row with x-ray check (via g8), but because pawn g7 is in the way, this is not possible. However, through a clever check with the knight, White can eliminate this defender: 1.Nf6+! If black does not capture the knight, white plays 2.Nxd7 on the next move, but if black plays 2... gxf6, we see that white has lured away the g-pawn. Now white can reach the bottom rank with his rook: 2.Rg8+ Kf7 3.Rxb8 and white has won an exchange (a rook against a knight)!
